Understanding the Role of Cannabinoid Biosynthesis in Modern Medicine

Cannabinoid biosynthesis is a complex process in several plant species. It involves oxidative cleavage of fatty acids, isoprenoid biosynthesis, prenylation, and terpenoid geranyl pyrophosphate (GPP) formation. Cannabinoid biosynthesis companies are emerging to deliver a range of medical solutions with cannabis.

These cannabinoid compounds are a significant class of plant bioactive agents. They interact with several receptors, such as CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor g (PPARg), and TRP ion channels to regulate signaling, immune, and neuronal cell function.

Modern Medicine

The endocannabinoid system plays a significant role in cancer progression, mainly inhibiting cell proliferation and tumor invasion/metastasis, angiogenesis, and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. It is also involved in chemoresistance and induction of apoptosis and autophagy. Cannabinoid compounds have been investigated as pharmacological agents for this purpose, with a growing number of preclinical models available for testing (Fig. 2).

Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine is a group of practices that are not considered by medical science to be based on scientific evidence. It includes everything from traditional methods to new-age quackery.

Alternative health care is a highly profitable and politically powerful sector. Its marketing advertises that it can cure and treat illnesses without needing drugs, surgery, or other traditional treatments.

Despite this claim, CAM is still a controversial and often poorly-regulated industry that has produced very few RCTs proving its effectiveness.

To better understand the role of cannabinoid biosynthesis in modern medicine, Taura and colleagues analyzed an extensive data set to evaluate the effects of cannabinoid phytochemicals on cellular models. Their results revealed that cannabinoids induce autophagy and mitochondrial apoptosis (cell death) in human glioblastoma cells.

Complementary Medicine

Complementary medicine, also called CAM, is a range of treatments and therapies that are not considered standard medical care. It includes acupuncture, herbal medicines, massage therapy, hypnosis, and meditation.

Many people use complementary medicines along with their regular medical care. These are often used to treat problems such as pain, stress, and fatigue.

However, some treatments can cause side effects or interact with conventional medications. Never use complementary therapy without telling your doctor.

Defining what therapies are classified as complementary, alternative, and integrative medicine (CAIM) is complex for many reasons. It has also changed over time and varies by geography and historical period.

Traditional Medicine

For millennia, people have used herbs to treat a variety of ailments. It is estimated that 80 percent of the world’s population still relies on traditional medicines instead of modern drugs for their primary healthcare needs.

The role of traditional medicine in modern medicine is becoming increasingly important. The need to develop new treatments is growing due to the lack of drugs available on the market, drug resistance, and high research and development costs.

This is a complex challenge because there are thousands of different molecules in the natural compounds used in traditional medicines, some potentially active and others not. Moreover, the quality of these products can vary significantly across countries and communities.

This is a major problem because it creates uncertainty for scientists and researchers working on modern medicine. This is particularly true when it comes to traditional medication.
